Bergamot is one of the most popular autumn fragrances for the home, with an average worldwide search volume of 8,000.

Known for its uplifting qualities, it’s used in aromatherapy for low mood and it’s the second highest selling essential oil on Amazon, after lavender.

Pronounced with a hard T (not ‘berg-a-mo’), bergamot fragrance is derived from the green bergamot citrus fruit, native to Italy. Thanks to its light refreshing appeal, it’s a popular top note in many high-end perfumes, such as Dior and Oscar de la Renta.

Lots of celebrity perfumes feature this clean zesty essential oil. 'Lovely' - launched in 2005 by Sarah Jessica Parker, blends bergamot with mandarin, rosewood, lavender, and ‘apple martini’, while Katy Perry’s 'Killer Queen' mixes it with top notes of forest fruits and plum.

Paris Hilton’s 'Love Rush', released  to tie-in with her wedding day, also blends bergamot with mandarin zest,  with a dash of white apricot nectar. The business-minded Paris has undoubtedly been influenced by the best-selling celebrity perfume ever - White Diamonds by Elizabeth Taylor, which features bergamot, neroli, orange, and lily.

For home fragrance, most bergamot-based diffusers and candles are combined with other citrus essential oils, or lavender. These are ideal for spring and summer - but for autumn, more piquant oils provide a cosier aroma. Clove, cinnamon, and ginger oil bring out the spice in bergamot beautifully. Blended together, they’ll have your house smelling like a fresh batch of cookies.

Florals also combine well with bergamot. Beyond summer, however, juniper berry, coriander, clary sage, rosemary and frankincense make better alliances.

But the best bedfellow for bergamot in the autumn has to be woody essential oils. Sandalwood is a predictable partner, but a more original option is oak moss. Derived from lichen, oak moss is earthy, bitter, leathery, lightly smoky – and a little bit masculine.

The new Bergamot and Oakmoss scent lamp by Irish brand OONZIE is the ultimate unisex home fragrance and gift. With hints of amber and musk, oakmoss adds depth and sensuality to OONZIE’S classic Bergamot fragrance oil and brings out its subtle spiciness. Rather like a superior Earl Grey tea, it strikes the prefect balance between the woodiness and citrus, creating a zesty yet cosy and calming home fragrance, particularly when the oil is illuminated by the shimmering LED base on the OONZIE Scent Lamp.

Encased in oak wood and glass, this under-lit reed diffuser creates a mesmerising scented halo – perfect in the hallway, living room, or bedroom.

OONZIE’s 200ml Bergamot & Oakmoss Scent Lamp refills also be used to refill the smaller battery-operated versions, giving you double the amount of pure fragrance oil need to fill the 100ml glass jar.
